Evolution of Traffic Microsimulation and Its Use for Modeling Connected and Automated Vehicles

Traffic microsimulation has a functional role in understanding the traffic performance on road network. This study originated with intent to understand and its use modeling connected automated vehicles (CAVs). Initially, paper focuses evolution of examining various commercial open-source simulation platforms available their importance studies. Following this, current autonomous vehicle (AV) strategies are reviewed. From review analysis, it is observed that AVs modeled two sets strategies. In first set, inbuilt models used replicate driving behavior by adapting models’ parameters. second strategy, AV programmed help externalities (e.g., Application Programming Interface (API)). Studies simulating mostly VISSIM compared other platforms. addition, studies heavily focused AVs’ penetration rate impact flow characteristics safety. On hand, which simulated communication aspects for management. Finally, cosimulation CAVs explored, ongoing research attempts discussed.
